Jones was presented with the Richard Rodgers Award, in recognition of his contributions to American culture through the arts. He was also the third person to be presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2006, Jones was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. "An artist can be classified as a great composer, writer, or performer based on his or her contribution to music," he explained. "I consider myself to be a versatile artist. I was influenced by many. If you look at the works of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Stevie Wonder, and others, you'll notice they had similar gifts. There are distinct differences between their sounds, but they all share a sense of inspiration, spontaneity, and total inspiration. I think I'm a similar kind of person. I don't want to be stuck in a lane; I want to be versatile." In 2005, Jones received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Jones continued to compose and perform until his death. He had many health problems in the last years of his life. In March 2016, the US Postal Service honored Jones' career with a tribute stamp. The stamp also features Jones' autobiography, From Q, with Love. May 2015, he was named a Disney Legend. Jones died at age eighty-four in Los Angeles, California. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018.
